A life long resident of Wells County, Monte graduated in 1968 from Norwell High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines from 1968-1971 serving as a military policeman & working at the Camp Pendelton correctional center. In 1992, he joined the Indiana Air Guard Reserve & graduated from Officers Training Academy in May of 1994. He retired at the rank of Captain in 1998 when the unit was deactivated.

Monte joined the Wells County Sheriff Reserve in June of 1976 and became a full time deputy 1/1/1977. He served till 9/17/2008 serving over 31 years.  He was elected Sheriff and returned to the Dept. on 1/1/2011.  He has served as a Training Officer, Chief Deputy and now as Sheriff.
 
Monte has been a member of the Uniondale Vol Fire Dept for 24 years currently serving as the Assistant Chief. He has also been a member of the Wells County EMS reserve since 1992. He has been a member of the Fraternal Order of Police for 32 years and held the office's of President , Vice-President & Sec/Treas, currently serving as President for the past 7 years.
